Ewelina Ferruso models in front of her portrait

Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening for Kris Kuksi's latest body of work entitled Triumph. The solo exhibition held at New York's Joshua Liner Gallery was his most impressive yet. Focusing on going big, Kris brought the heavy artillery as several mammoth works became the centerpieces of the night. Working on a scale that we were not accustomed to seeing, Mr. Kuski did two things that usually don't go hand in hand - he increased the size while maintaining his meticulous standard and detailing for his works. We also caught Kris exercising his painterly talents for a special piece in this showing. To top off the show, Kris also created a lifesize replica of his Church Tank. Check out all the insanity after the jump. Just this past Saturday night, the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles hosted Go West, a joint show between Kris Kuksi and David Ellis curated by Joshua Liner that is a followup to the Go East exhibition that was hosted at their New York last May where the two galleries roles were flip-flopped. For his part, Kuksi brought along several of the large mixed media assemblages that he is famous for. These time-intensive gothic creations are incredibly detailed and for those of you in the LA-area that have never seen one before in person, here is your chance. Last time we saw a large body of work from Kris Kuksi, he was giving his fans in Los Angeles a rare close look at his intricate mixed media assemblages (covered). This time around, he will be returning to the Joshua Liner Gallery for an exhibition entitled Revival tonight (November 21st), his fourth solo with the Chelsea showspace (see 2009 & 2012). Ranging from medium sized to over five feet tall and wide, these ornate sculptures filled with assorted god-like figures, religious iconography, war machines, and dark elements must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Kuksi explains - "Ancient Rome is our history teacher and our ghost for the future. Revival is about re-hashing, re-mixing, re-inventing, and re-creating.” Discuss Kris Kuksi here.

Kris Kuksi Liner AM 30

The Joshua Liner Gallery in New York recently opened a solo exhibition from Kris Kuksi entitled Revival. The intricate and complex sculptural works from the Kansas-based artist plays a perfect contrast to the deceptively simple works from Riusuke Fukahori, who is concurrently showing in the same gallery. Kuksi's mixed media assemblages explore the dark sides of the human psyche with ornate representations created from model kits and other materials that he has re-appropriated. His works need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated, but for those unable to make the show, take a look at more opening night photos below... Discuss Kris Kuksi here.

Nike Vault at the STAPLES Center recently launched The Kobe Prelude Experience. For eight weeks, they are showcasing Kobe inspired artwork by different artists, and every Saturday they will unveil a new piece. Each piece is tied to a key moment in Kobe's career. LA-based artist, Allison "Hueman" Torneros, unveiled the first piece in the eight part series the other night. Nike commissioned her to create a surreal piece inspired by his 81 point game. Torneros explains, "I wanted my artwork to portray the energy he had that night and his multi-faceted persona." Kris Kuksi followed with the second piece (seen above), a sculpture which exalts Kobe's famous streak of 50+ points in 4 straight games. Keep a look out as some other great artists will be unveiling art in the coming weeks as well. Photo Credit: Nike.

While we may not have gotten to see much of Kobe Bryant this season, we still have the chance to see what is probably the greatest display of artwork showcasing moments in the Laker great's career. A while back, we covered the beginning of the eight part series and then followed up with a notice for the last discussion of the series. Now that all eight paintings have been unveiled, we went down to Nike Vault to see the display in its entirety. We have heard many questions regarding who all the participating artists are so here they all are listed out... Coming up on November 15th, Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles will be opening their second showing (see 2012) with Kris Kuksi and his insane mixed-media assemblage works. Antiquity in the Faux will once again give his fans in SoCal the chance to admire his beautifully grotesque compositions that take a variety of disparate items - figurines, model parts, collectibles, craft parts, and jewelry - and arranges them in a way to tell a intricate story. Oftentimes these narratives involve struggle, conflict, faith, sexuality, and power surrounding a central figure and spreading to the chaos around them. Discuss Kris Kuksi here.

Kris Kuksi x US Marine Corps –“Battles Won” Sculptures

At the end of last year, Kris Kuksi revealed a series of three sculptures he worked on for the United States Marine Corps as part of their recruitment campaign. The Battles Won set features bronzes entitled Nation's Call, Waged In Will, and the nearly seven feet tall At Their Core (seen in more detail here), which were later donated to the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia where they can be viewed. Taking approximately seven months to complete, the intricate and richly layered mixed media works is created with Kuksi's signature assemblage technique utilizing found objects such as toy soldiers, items from model kits, and 3D printed objects. He further states - "The mentality of a Marine is selflessness, camaraderie, brotherhood and kinship — all working together and fighting to the death for your fellow man. I wanted to capture the fighting spirit." https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=42&v=8q5R8cNbYJQ Discuss Kris Kuksi here.
